On Strategy II: A Critical Analysis of the Gulf War
Published in Paperback by Dell Pub Co (February, 1992)
Authors: Harry G. Summers and Summers Harry G
Average review score:

Excellent analysis leading to the victory of the Gulf War
Is probably the best analysis of why we succeeded so completely in the Gulf War. It covers the historical and the strategic ,(socio-political), aspects leading to the Gulf War from the American Military standpoint. It is closer to a collection of interrelated essays on the different aspects that lead to success in war, starting from what in essence led to the defeat of America in Vietnam. This is a must for those interested in more than just tactics or for those interested in being (or understanding) a great leader and the elements that make "great" policy.

A Brilliant Historical Perspective
This is not a blow-by-blow account of the Gulf War; indeed, the only actual description of the progress of the war itself is the Appendix, a transcript of General Schwarztkopf's 2/27/91 press briefing.

The bulk of Summers' book is a critical analysis of the historical factors that in large part determined how the war was prosecuted and that determined its outcome. Much of this is a re-examination of why we failed in Vietnam- a subject covered brilliantly in Summers' earlier "On Strategy:"- and the changes in US Military policy that followed. Particular import is placed on how the support of the American people and world leaders was cultivated to support the Gulf War.

For students of history, politics and the military, this is a must read.

Once upon a Summer
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Author: Janette Oke
Average review score:

cute series!
This was a cute series. These books are written from a boy's point of view and that makes them very unique. I don't know how Oke could write in a boy's point of view so well! It was as if a boy had written the book, which is probably why this series is not overly romantic, except for the last book. It had some pretty funny parts--and that helps make a book good.

I like the last one in this series the best.

The first book in a very good series
This book and series shows the struggles of an unusual family structure including: a grandfather and his father, brother, daughter and grandson. The focus is on the grandson who was orphaned as an infant and has known no other family. His young aunt is the only mother that he has ever known. As the story unfolds, the young boy has to deal with jealousy towards his aunt's suitors. The whole series is quite well done.

Otherwise Engaged (Harlequin Temptation, No 813)
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (January, 1901)
Author: Cara Summers
Average review score:

An absolute deeeelight!
This book is by far the best Temptation edition I've read in a long time. Of course, there are other editions which are very good as well, but this one is outstanding. I was ABSOLUTELY mesmerized from the story and the two distinctive, idiosyncratic characters who pull this book out of the ordinary. Cara Summers will hold you spellbounded right from the start. And if that's the case, you usually know that you're about to read a great book! Actually, while reading this book you have the feeling to watch a movie 'without any filmcut'. So you can be sure it defines the term "page turner" with sexy characters that kept me smiling, funny dialogue that rang true, and situations that made it impossible to put the book down until the end.

What happens when a somewhat uptight, by-the-book Boston socialite and an easy going P.I. get together? Well, let's just say the result is hot...and definitely passionate!

When Tyler Sheridan discovers through the personal ads that her groom isn't planning to show up for their wedding, she thinks it can't get any worse. That is, until she hooks up with seriously sexy P.I. Nick Romano to find her erstwhile fiancé...and ends up wishing her groom had taken out his ad sooner...

Nick Romano has had it ' with the detective business and with women! But when gorgeous, desperate Tyler shows up at his door, all of a sudden he is considering the unthinkable - to postpone his move to California for a few more days. What can he do but help her out? Only he'd never guessed how good they'd be together ' in bed and out. But Tyler's still wearing another man's ring...though he tried to make sure for not much longer!

Nick and Tyler, from opposite backgrounds, couldn't be more different and that's what makes their relationship so exciting. From the first moment on, sparks fly though both try to ignore that ' very unsuccessfully. But you will never question the sudden closeness between the two of them! Ms. Summers has a way with characterization and readers will love the hero and heroine. I've been reading Temptations for years, and this book is right up there with my favorites of all time. I love it when I really laugh out loud with a book. In 'OTHERWISE ENGAGED' Cara Summers takes you on a roller coaster ride of romance and a little suspense. She knows how to capture a reader's attention and refuses to let it go. Absolutely wonderful reading!

Prepare yourself for a wild ride!

Very highly recommended
OTHERWISE ENGAGED, the January selection of The Personal Touch! miniseries is not to be missed. Cara Summers presents the story of Tyler Sheridan, who discovers through the personal ads that her groom will miss the wedding. When she seeks out a Private Detective to find her fiancé, Tyler meets just the wrong guy at just the right time. When these direct opposites meet, the chemical reaction is extraordinary!

Thy have nothing in common except passion. Tyler's a Boston socialite and president of her company. She hires Nick Romano to find her erstwhile fiancé. From the first glimpse of the sexy, hunky Nick, Tyler's hooked. In the six months she'd known Richard, she'd never known him to stir anything close to the reactions Nick produces instantly. Sheridans don't hit people and they never loose their temper. They certainly don't fall for PIs. But in Nick's company, Tyler finds herself behaving in strange and different ways.

From the moment Tyler shows him her grandmother's recommendation, Nick finds Tyler getting to him. He'd already had the electric and phone disconnected, his boxes are packed, and Nick is ready to pull up stakes, leaving the world of PIs behind for becoming a lawyer. Then Tyler sashays into his office, convincing him to accept the case. His instant attraction is only cooled by the need to find out what Richard is up to. When Nick realizes that the missing in a fake, a liar and a kidnapper, he becomes determined to find the truth about the missing fiancé. And while they are otherwise engaged, Nick and Tyler may find that their hearts have a mind of their own.

If not for the personal touch, these dynamic characters would never have met. Even the twist of the title provides a nice giggle with its play on words. Indeed, Cara Summers creates a humorous, highly entertaining contemporary romance with her delectable writing style. Very highly recommended.

Prairie Skies: Pioneer Summer
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (August, 2002)
Authors: Deborah Hopkinson and Patrick Faricy
Average review score:

Great chapter book series!
My son loves the Prairie Skies series and can't wait for OUR KANSAS HOME. It's a warm family story but full of rich historical details that never overwhelm the plot. My son is in fifth grade but is a reluctant reader, so I'm always on the lookout for books that hold his interest but that aren't too babyish. Highly recommended!

Exciting historical fiction!
As a teacher and as a parent I've often been frustrated as I try to help my kids study for history tests about the pre-Civil War era. They have to learn about the Kansas-Nebraska Act, but it's just another date to memorize. But in Hopkinson's new chapter book, kids get a look at what life might have been like then. The note says she used letters and manuscripts to research the time period, and it shows. Even though the book is geared for third graders, my fifth grade classroom has enjoyed it too. Highly recommended!

Fantastic recipes and nostalgic narrative! Best marmalade!
This book is as much FUN to read as it is informative. The author gives us a glimpse of yesteryear as she retells of the preserving ways of her family. The recipes I have tried are outstanding, and not to be found duplicated in other books.

This book contains recepies found only in your grandma's recipe book. Fantastic instructions and recipes for kosher dill pickles as well as dandelion jelly. If you want to find out how to use all the fun things you grow in your garden this is the book to use. You will find all kinds of instructions for canning, drying and freezing of foods. Great book it's a shame it is out of publication.

Rainy Lake: A Novel
Published in Hardcover by Graywolf Press (December, 1994)
Author: Mary Francois Rockcastle
Average review score:

Best Book I Ever Read
When I first read Rainy Lake, I fell in love with Mary Rockcastle's beautifully illustrative writing. Not only was I swept off my feet by the vividly real characters, but also by the lush setting that pervaded into my own reality. I have returned to this novel many times in my life when I have needed an escape. In Rainy Lake, Rockcastle portrays a teenage girl who struggles to find a balance between living through her heart's desires and relying on common sense. I recommend this novel to all girls who are struggling with their own identities while on the road to becoming women.

Do yourself a huge favor....
Read this book! Rainy Lake is easily the best book I've ever read. I read it for the first time about 4 years ago and I loved it, but it is one of those books that you find yourself thinking about without really realizing it. When I do realize I'm thinking about it, I usually come here to see if Mary has come out with a new novel yet. Similar to "The Prince of Tides", but less predictable. It makes you feel either happy or sad, you're not quite sure; if you do feel sad, it feels good to feel sad.

Seachange: The Summer Voyage Form East to West Scotland of the Anassa
Published in Hardcover by Canongate Pub Ltd (November, 1999)
Author: Mairi Hedderwick
Average review score:

Beautifully illustrated and well written travel book
Sea Change is an enthralling journey with the author as she overcomes fears to sail from East to West Scotland. Mairie writes with sensitivity, evoking memories for anyone who has ever sailed. Her beautiful watercolours and drawings are the icing on the cake.

A terrific true-life maritime adventure!
Possessed with a desire for romantic adventure, yet afraid of the sea, Mairi Hedderwick undertook a six week voyage with "the Captain" down the Caledonian Canal and out to sea in a small, antiquated sailing boat. Armed only with her pens, paints, papers, and pots of herbs, children's book author/illustrator Hedderwick recorded her voyage. She found that the romantic moments were scarce and the voyage fraught with danger and difficulty. But by finding humor in even the most adverse circumstances while conveying the beauty of the land and sea through her words and pictures, she is able to convey to the reader her unforgettable voyage of discovery. Sea Change is a superbly presented travelogue that will thrill even the most sedentary armchair traveler and may well inspire the reader to throw caution to the wind and embark upon a voyage of discovery of their own.

Secure Computing: Threats and Safeguards

Average review score:

UCSD Text
I found this book to be excellent as an overview for those new to the subject, or for the Computer Security Professional. I intend to use it as a text for my UCSD Extension course, "Computer and Network Security."

Great overview of computer/network/data security techniques
This book is a BIBLE for those that need an introduction to the necessity of protecting data and access to files, data and networks. The book focuses on external as well as internal sources of security breach. In to day's environemnt of distributed technology and information sharing via the internet, it is incumbent upon all individuals and organizations to protect sensitive information.

Not only does this book focus on available software but it also looks at hardware and methodology that encourages a more secure environment.

A great read for anyone that wishes to think about and expand their interest in protecting and guarding the vulnerabilities that inherently exist.
